In this Qi Talk, you’ll learn how Tai Chi Chuan is connected with an ancient lineage of postural initiation which includes four dimensions of purpose: self-healing, spiritual unfoldment, self-defense, and changing your life stance psychologically. This perspective, stemming from Dr. Mayer’s research, imaginal mythopoetic exploration, and thirty years of practice from some of the world’s most respected Tai Chi masters, was outlined in his book, Secrets to Living Younger Longer: The Self-Healing Path of Qigong, Standing Meditation and Tai Chi (2004). After having presented on this topic in his 2004 keynote address to the NQA, Michael will talk about what’s current for him on this path: He’ll share how Tai Chi/Qigong movements naturally arise at key moments in psychotherapy; how Tai Chi, from a postmodern perspective, is a means to experience personal meanings and transpersonal healing as one practices the set; and how Standing Meditation Qigong is the foundation of Tai Chi.
Dr. Michael Mayer is a licensed psychologist and Qigong/Tai Chi teacher. He has been practicing and teaching Tai Chi and Qigong for three decades. Dr. Mayer pioneered the integration of Qigong and psychotherapy, and was the first person to train doctoral psychology students in these methods at an accredited university. He presents his approach to bodymind healing at professional conferences, national/international workshops, universities, and hospitals. Michael is the author of 20 publications, including six books, on ancient wisdom traditions (including Qigong) with modern psychology. His most recent Ben Franklin award winning book, The Path of a Reluctant Metaphysician: Stories and Practices for Trouble Times, tells his autobiographical journey integrating Qigong/Tai Chi with Western bodymind healing methods.
