Presents half-day pre-conference intensive workshop
Deepening Healing with Transpersonal Energy Psychology
When: June 2, 2016; 1:15- 4:30 pm, 3 CE hours
Where: Hyatt Regency, 5101 Great America Pkwy, Santa Clara, CA 95054
Energy psychology can be deepened by drawing from its wider healing root system in transpersonal psychotherapy. Through theory, practices (e.g. Qigong), case illustrations, and demonstration, this transpersonal energy psychology approach will be applied to psychological issues (e.g. trauma) and to healthcare in our society. {Based on the book Energy Psychology…}
Energy Psychology: Self-Healing Practices for Bodymind Health,
by Michael Mayer, (North Atlantic/Random House, 2009).
What is Energy Psychology? (requires a .pdf viewer)
What is Energy Medicine? (Excerpt from the book)
What you’ll learn at the Workshop: Discover a new origin myth for Energy Psychology, i.e. that before its modern origins in Applied Kinesiology, Thought Field Therapy, etc, Energy Psychology’s earlier root system derived from: A.) the Western mystery tradition (Mathews, 1988), symbolic process modalities, and a wider array of psychological perspectives, e.g. Gendlin’s Focusing, traditional psychotherapies, etc. (B.) Traditions of postural initiation (including Qigong/Tai Chi).
- Experience, through theory, case examples, and demonstration, how the tools of this transpersonal energy psychology approach can be applied to cases of anxiety, trauma, chronic pain, healing mind-body disorders.
- Learn expanded psycho-energetic clinical tools. For example, The River of Life Guided visualization process (Mayer,1996, 2007) uses the out-breath coming down the microcosmic orbit, self-soothing of the heart using acu-point CV 17, Gendlin’s Focusing, and cognitive restructuring to clear energy blockages.
- Practice microcosmic orbit breathing from Qigong ( a key element of the River of Life Process) is an important part of reversing sympathetic nervous system overload of trauma patients and activating a parasympathetic nervous system response (van der Kolk, 2014, p. 267). Participants will also experience how this practice can enhance sitting, standing, and moving meditation by adding a psycho-energetic dimension.
- Dive into the Mythic Journey Process, a psycho-energetic, psycho-mythological method of personal transformation, to learn how symbolic process methods are an important part of energy psychology. This method has a personal healing dimension to it that helps one to work through psycho-energetic blocks. In addition, the Mythic Journey Process can be applied to finding our stance toward life itself and our wider world.
- Enhance awareness of the power of somatic movement and postures to create psychological change, by discovering how at moments of felt shift (Gendlin, 1978) in psychotherapy, somatic movements arise that often look like Qigong/Tai Chi movements. By practitioners being aware of the deeper meanings of these movements they can be used to somatically (hypnotically) anchor new life stances and embody personal transformation.
